The Vietnam Workshop in Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) examined three types of low-income settlements, representing three key issues for future urban development. Canal-side squatter communities demanded better information available to them during their impending resettlement to the outskirts. Fringe squatters represented the future: here process and pattern was examined, with the view of developing a model for efficacious growth. An inner-city 'blue-collar' area was examined to develop strategies for maintaining affordable housing after upgrading, avoiding gentrification. A squatter community in a 13-story highrise provided another perspective of how the low income secures housing.

Reflections from the Vietnam Workshop

This Program addresses issues at the community level, focused on the vulnerable income groups which comprise the majority. It is organized around a 2-week field workshop supported by background preparatory work.
