SIGUS: Special Interest Group in Urban Settlement

Description: http://www.ewb-uk.org/system/files/REDES_0.jpg

A small NGO in San Salvador, welcomes assistance in its work with rural communities in El Salvador, specifically in housing and sanitation systems.  REDES was our local partner in the SIGUS workshops in 2011 and in 2004.

What work could I do to help?
Often volunteers carry out assessments in a number of communities to evaluate the impact of projects developed by REDES in the past. A report would be prepared and presented to REDES, together with recommendations on improvements and the suitability for different communities.

The information would help REDES assess the success of past projects as well as inform future projects within the communities, and evaluate their approach in implementing the projects.

Who is REDES?
REDES was founded in 1989 with the aim of facilitating the return and rehabilitation of Salvadorans displaced by the armed conflict of the 80’s and 90’s. Since then it has gone on to expand its work throughout the country, playing a key role after the major earthquake in 2001 to work with communities to redevelop after the disaster.

Their mission is to generate the capacity for self-sufficiency and human development by encouraging beneficiary participation, facilitating processes and technology and nurturing skills. An infrastructure department provides poor communities with good housing and sanitation. It also builds public buildings, such as clinics, for communities.

REDES has received volunteers for a number of years, particularly from England.  For more information (in Spanish only): http://www.redes.org/
